Three Aspects of Assessment: Info Fluency, Inquiry & Use of tech tools

In California students are required to take a government course in the Fall of their senior year and an economics course in Spring, unless their are taking IB history courses. All of my mini lessons are on economics specifically focusing on unemployment; the different types, how to calculate it, the impact it has on countries and lastly inflation and deflation. Throughout this unit students will be assigned a country that they will be focusing on and they will do different assignments on. For this weeks post I wanted to reflect about the assessment I will be using for the inflation lesson.

The information fluency component students will focus on will be Present ~ how they can communicate their research. Students will present their research and data using an infographic, they will also be required to cite their sources.

The level of the Digital Bloom's Taxonomy I'm torn between two: analyzing, because they are looking at the data for their specific country and creating a chart to show the rate of inflation over time and creating, because they are taking the information and data and putting it into an infographic. The SAMR level being assessed is augmentation; students are taking the research and data they've obtained and using digital features to demonstrate their understanding of inflation and or deflation on their specific country. This infographic will able be used to teach their peers about the different countries and how inflation/deflation affects countries differently.

I will have students use CANVA.com to create their infographic as I feel this is the most user friendly for students as I find not all students are tech savvy.

Students will be required to do several things for this assignment: they will define both inflation and deflation, discuss which is currently affecting their assigned country, discuss how they know this, show in chart form (that they will create) the rate of inflation over the last 5 years and lastly they will come up with three potential ways to help their countries economy in regards to inflation and or deflation. I choose this assessment strategy for a couple different reasons: students love to be creative especially if it's digital, they are so tired of doing presentations all the time and defiantly tired listening to the teacher just talk all the time. However more importantly I wanted them to do the research and read about their country, I also want them to demonstrate that they can show the rate of inflation and or deflation in a graph or chart and be able to explain it. One of the requirements is that students can define, explain/provide an example of inflation/deflation, and show the rate in a chart/graph form. Although students are obtaining the research from different sites this assignment requires them to dig deeper and be able to explain it to their peers using just their infographic. To successfully complete this assignment students will need to think analytically, problem-solve, come up with possible solutions and research credible sources, cite them correctly.

I use this site and its videos to help explain to students why we aren't just doing posters or presentations on material anymore.

  1. I love that you're not only changing up the old poster board/presentation routine, but also explaining to students WHY this change is happening. Understanding the why of not only the assignment's content but also of the process is so important for students taking ownership. This sounds like such a great lesson with a real world connection!
